A Time for Reflection - Chelsea 2001

This was our first attempt at exhibiting a small garden at Chelsea Flower Show - it won us a Silver Medal! The late Geoff Hamilton's Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, made famous through the BBC Gardeners' World programmes, was the inspiration for our courtyard garden this year. The garden takes as its theme Geoff's passion for cottage garden-style planting. As Geoff did in his own garden, reclaimed materials were used for the framework, complemented by four planted areas demonstrating the diversity of planting styles which can be achieved in a small space. One area is planted in a traditional cottage garden style using such plants as Aquilegia and Digitalis and a trellised mirror supported Clematis and other climbers in the second area. Height is achieved in the third section by using architectural plants such as Pieris and Astrantia while the fourth area - adjacent to a water feature - is planted with Hosta cultivars, arum lilies and tall grasses with underplanting of Festuca glauca and Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'.

The water feature in the garden consisted of glass tubes that overflowed with gentle running water. Some of the tubes were filled with glass beads.

Modern Monolith - Chelsea 2002

This was our garden we exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show 2002. It won us a Silver Medal in the Chic Garden Category of Small gardens. This year's design was a modern one. Overall, foliage plants dominated this modern garden emphasising the clear crisp design. Taller plants on the boundaries include bamboo and reeds with underplanting of hostas, ferns and grasses. Textured walls have random insets of coloured 'glass' form the boundaries whilst a copper-coloured water feature set into a wall produces water which falls into the pool below. This pool is planted with arums, irises and marsh marigolds. A pathway leads through the garden to a paved area which is partially obscured by a large monolith.

A Twist Of Lime - Chelsea 2003

This was our exhibit for 2003 - Based on the image of a twisted slice of lime, this idea is represented in the water feature and pergola. The bubble pool centre is like the fizz in a drink, providing a relaxing sound. The colour scheme of the planting is predominantly lime, selected for their leaf shapes, colour and perfume, and include varieties of ivy, ferns, chamomile and honeysuckle.
